The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region has expressed concern over the inadequate supply of relief items needed to support victims of flooding, as the district continues to record disaster cases during the year.
The Senior Principal Disaster Control Officer for the district, Mr. Baba Iddrisu, disclosed that several communities have experienced flooding incidents from January to date, placing increasing pressure on the organisation’s limited resources and affecting its ability to respond promptly to emergencies.
Speaking on the challenges confronting the district office, Mr. Iddrisu explained that the shortage of essential relief materials, including roofing sheets, cement, mattresses, cooking utensils and other household items, has become a major obstacle in providing immediate assistance to affected families.
According to him, many residents who suffer losses from floods regularly seek support from NADMO, but the organisation is unable to meet all their needs due to the inadequate stock of relief supplies. He indicated that the availability of the required items would significantly improve the organisation’s response and help victims recover from the impact of the disasters.
Mr. Iddrisu revealed that the district office has already communicated the situation to the appropriate authorities and appealed for the urgent release of additional relief materials to strengthen disaster response efforts and provide timely assistance to vulnerable households.
He noted that the increasing occurrence of flooding highlights the need for greater collaboration between government agencies, development partners and the public to improve disaster preparedness and ensure communities are better protected against natural hazards.
Beyond the call for support, the Senior Principal Disaster Control Officer urged residents to adopt preventive measures that could reduce the incidence of avoidable disasters across the district.
He advised landlords and property owners to engage electricians certified by the Energy Commission for all electrical installations to minimise the risk of fire outbreaks resulting from faulty wiring.
Mr. Iddrisu also appealed to residents to keep drains and gutters free from refuse to ensure the smooth flow of rainwater during the rainy season, stressing that blocked drainage systems contribute significantly to flooding in many communities.
He further cautioned against the construction of houses and other structures in waterlogged and flood-prone areas, emphasizing that adherence to building regulations and proper environmental sanitation practices would help protect lives and property.
The NADMO official expressed optimism that with adequate logistical support and increased public awareness, the district would be better positioned to respond to emergencies while reducing the devastating effects of floods and other disasters on affected communities.
