Environmental Scientist, Chris Gordon, has called for the strict enforcement of existing environmental laws and regulations as a major solution to Accra’s recurring flooding challenges.
According to him, the increasing construction of buildings in wetlands and flood-prone areas continues to worsen the disaster situation and expose residents to serious risks.
Speaking on Point of View with Bernard Avle monitored by Newspyramid.com, Prof. Gordon stressed the need for authorities and residents to respect and enforce existing laws to help reduce the flooding menace.
He further urged authorities to take decisive action against unauthorized developments in restricted zones.
“We should obey our existing laws and regulations. That is the simplest thing. We are filling the wetlands. We are building in hazard and disaster-risk areas, and they are the ones who suffer. Let’s follow the laws as they exist. Let us enforce the laws as has been said.” Prof. Gordon stated.
The Environmental Scientist explained that wetlands and waterways naturally serve as channels for rainwater, however, human activities and illegal developments have obstructed these areas, resulting in severe flooding in many parts of Accra.
According to him, residents living in such high-risk areas often become the most affected whenever there is heavy rainfall, leading to destruction of property and displacement of families.
Prof. Gordon therefore called for stronger collaboration among government institutions, city authorities and communities to ensure proper planning and environmental protection to prevent future flooding disasters.
