South Korea made a winning start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign after coming from behind to defeat the Czech Republic 2-1 in their Group A opener in Guadalajara, Mexico.
The Koreans recovered from a second-half setback to secure all three points and join Mexico at the top of the group standings following the hosts’ victory over South Africa.
After a goalless first half, the Czech Republic took the lead in the 59th minute when captain Ladislav Krejci headed home to put his side in front.
South Korea responded strongly and found the equaliser in the 67th minute through midfielder Hwang In-beom, who capped a fine team move with a composed finish.
Hwang later turned provider as substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu scored the winning goal in the 80th minute to complete the comeback and hand South Korea a deserved victory.
Captain Son Heung-min endured a frustrating evening in front of goal despite creating several opportunities for his side. The veteran forward remains two goals short of becoming South Korea’s all-time leading scorer.
South Korea dominated possession for large spells of the match and created the better chances, with their persistence eventually paying off in the closing stages.
Speaking after the game, Czech Republic coach Miroslav Koubek admitted that South Korea were the better side on the day.
The victory marks South Korea’s first win in an opening World Cup match since 2010 and strengthens their hopes of advancing to the knockout stage of the tournament.
South Korea will face Mexico in their next Group A fixture, while the Czech Republic take on South Africa as both teams continue their quest for qualification to the round of 32.
