The Board Chairman of GCB Bank PLC and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof. Joshua Alabi, is in Glasgow, Scotland, to support Team Ghana at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Prof. Alabi joined thousands of sports enthusiasts from across the Commonwealth to witness the opening stages of the Games and cheer on Ghanaian athletes competing in various disciplines. His presence is expected to boost the morale of Team Ghana as they strive to make the nation proud on one of the biggest sporting stages in the Commonwealth.
Ghana’s contingent is competing in Athletics, Para Athletics, Weightlifting, Para Powerlifting, Swimming, Para Swimming, Boxing, Judo and Cycling. The athletes are aiming to improve upon Ghana’s previous performances while contending for medals against some of the world’s finest competitors.The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games officially commenced on July 23 and will run until August 2, bringing together more than 3,000 athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories.
This year’s Games feature 10 sports and over 200 medal events, with a strong emphasis on inclusivity through an expanded para-sports programme.The inclusion of Para Athletics, Para Powerlifting and Para Swimming underscores the Commonwealth Games Federation’s commitment to promoting equal opportunities for athletes with disabilities, providing them with a global platform to showcase their talents.
Prof. Alabi’s visit reflects his continued commitment to national development and youth empowerment through sports.
