A five-year-old Kindergarten Two (KG2) pupil of Ahomakormua D/A Primary School in the Wassa East District of the Western Region has reportedly died after being bitten by a snake on the school compound, sparking anger and calls for accountability from the child’s parents.
The deceased, identified as Christiana Opare, was reportedly bitten during break time on Tuesday while pupils were playing on the school premises.
According to reports, the snake is believed to have emerged from overgrown bushes within the school environment, which had reportedly been left unattended.
The victim was immediately rushed to the Ekutuase CHPS Compound for emergency care but was later referred to Elmina Hospital due to the severity of her condition. She, however, reportedly died on the way to the facility.
The tragic incident has triggered strong reactions from the bereaved family, who are blaming school authorities for alleged negligence in maintaining the school environment.
Speaking in an interview, the father of the deceased, Mr. Ernest Opare, expressed deep disappointment, accusing school management of failing to clear the bushy surroundings of the school compound.
He alleged that the overgrown vegetation created a breeding ground for dangerous reptiles, including snakes, thereby exposing pupils to avoidable danger.
Mr. Opare further claimed that delays in seeking urgent medical attention may have contributed to his daughter’s death, insisting that quicker intervention could have improved her chances of survival.
The child’s mother, Ama Vida, also called on school authorities and relevant stakeholders to prioritize the safety of pupils by ensuring regular maintenance of school compounds.
She stressed the need for consistent clearing of bushes in schools to prevent similar tragedies, warning that negligence could put more children at risk.
The incident has left the community in shock, with residents urging education authorities and local government institutions to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death and enforce strict safety standards in schools.
Authorities are yet to officially comment on the incident.
