The Ghana High Commission in South Africa has temporarily suspended registration for the ongoing voluntary repatriation exercise for Ghanaians living in South Africa following the large number of applications received.
In an announcement issued on June 1, 2026, the High Commission said the suspension takes effect from June 2, 2026, to allow officials adequate time to process and screen applications already submitted by prospective returnees.
According to the statement, more than 1,500 Ghanaians have so far registered under the repatriation programme amid growing concerns over xenophobic attacks targeting African nationals in parts of South Africa.
“The temporary suspension is to enable the High Commission and Home Affairs process and screen the large number of applications already received.”
The High Commission noted that verification and processing of the applications are currently underway as authorities work to ensure a coordinated and orderly exercise.
Officials further assured members of the Ghanaian community who are yet to register that the repatriation exercise has not been closed permanently.
“The High Commission further wishes to assure all interested Ghanaians who have not yet registered that the repatriation exercise has not yet ended.”
The mission indicated that details regarding the next phase of registration would be communicated in due course after the ongoing verification process is completed.
The repatriation exercise forms part of measures being undertaken by the Government of Ghana following renewed xenophobic attacks in South Africa, which have reportedly resulted in injuries, looting, destruction of businesses and displacement of several African nationals.
The Government of Ghana has already advised citizens to avoid non-essential travel to South Africa while diplomatic engagements continue between authorities in both countries.
The High Commission also expressed appreciation to the Ghanaian community in South Africa for their cooperation, patience and understanding throughout the exercise.
