Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on young people to speak up against injustice and play an active role in protecting Ghana’s democratic freedoms.
He made the call at the National Emerging Leaders Economic Forum (NELEF )2026 event, where he expressed concern about what he described as growing pressure on Ghana’s democracy and shrinking civic space.
According to him, constitutional liberties, particularly freedom of speech and expression, must be protected to ensure that citizens can freely participate in the democratic process.
He said the law should serve as a shield for citizens against the excessive use of state power rather than being used to intimidate or silence them.
He urged young people to remain vigilant and courageous, especially at times when speaking out against injustice may be uncomfortable or unpopular.
“The lesson for us today, particularly for the young people gathered here, is that silence in the face of injustice can never be a foundation of free society,” he said.
Hon. Afenyo-Markin stressed that democracy requires citizens who are willing to ask difficult questions and defend the rights of others with courage, reason and responsibility.
He noted that the freedoms enjoyed by Ghanaians today were secured through sacrifices made by previous generations and cautioned against allowing those freedoms to be weakened through public silence.
He therefore encouraged the youth to take responsibility for protecting Ghana’s democratic gains and ensuring that constitutional rights remain respected for future generations.
