The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has dismissed reports of an impending change in its parliamentary leadership, reaffirming its confidence in Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and his team.
The party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, said the NPP had neither held a meeting nor initiated any discussion to replace the current leadership of the Minority Caucus.
Speaking at a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Accra on Thursday, October 29, 2026, Mr Kodua Frimpong said the party’s leadership was satisfied with the performance of the Minority Leader and would continue to support his team.
He said the reports suggesting a possible reshuffle were unfounded and urged the public and party members to disregard them.
Mr Kodua Frimpong stated that the party remained overwhelmingly satisfied with Mr Afenyo-Markin’s leadership and had no intention of making changes.
“We are overwhelmingly satisfied with the work being done by the leadership in Parliament, led by Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin. We are happy with the work that they are doing in Parliament, and we shall continue to support them. There is no meeting, there is no attempt to change the leadership in Parliament, so kindly take note,” he said.
The General Secretary also addressed growing public discussions surrounding the selection of a running mate for the party’s flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections.
He cautioned party members seeking the position against using social media campaigns and bloggers to promote their ambitions, explaining that the party’s constitution did not provide for the selection of a running mate through a contest or public campaign.
According to him, the flagbearer, in consultation with the party’s National Council, has the responsibility to nominate a running mate.
“Indeed, in selecting running mates, the flagbearer, in consultation with the National Council, shall nominate the running mate. There is no way in our constitution which says that running mate is selected through contest or through campaign. So people who are busily urging bloggers, urging people to promote them, the forum is wrong,” he cautioned.
Meanwhile, Mr Kodua Frimpong announced that the party would open its online portal from November 1 to 10, 2026, for prospective parliamentary candidates, including sitting Members of Parliament, to formally declare their intention to contest on the NPP ticket ahead of the 2028 general elections.
He explained that the exercise, which attracts an application fee of GH¢5,000, forms part of a new process introduced by the party to assess the preparedness and eligibility of prospective parliamentary candidates.
He said the initiative would enable the party to subject aspirants to vetting and capacity-building exercises to familiarise them with the responsibilities and expectations of parliamentary candidates.
“The rationale behind this exercise is to make sure that people who are aspiring to be selected as our parliamentary candidates are taken through a vetting and capacity-building exercise for them to appreciate what is expected of them as a potential parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party,” he explained.
The party has indicated that the declaration of interest is an initial administrative step towards its parliamentary candidate selection process and does not amount to the formal opening of nominations or authorisation for aspirants to begin campaigning.
The developments form part of the NPP’s preparations towards the 2028 general elections.
