Ghanaian entrepreneur, relationship counsellor and fashion executive Marie-Rose Sackey has urged individuals to develop a strong sense of self-awareness to guide their personal decisions and protect themselves from undue influence by other people’s opinions and expectations.
She said understanding one’s values, preferences, aspirations and priorities was essential to making informed decisions and maintaining a lifestyle that reflects personal identity rather than external pressure.
Ms Sackey explained that people who lack self-awareness could easily be influenced by conflicting opinions and expectations from others, particularly when making decisions about their appearance, lifestyle and personal happiness.
“You should know yourself. Man, know thyself. It’s very important. You should know yourself. If you don’t know yourself, then people can just throw you off because this one will give you this, and then you give this feedback, and then you are for, then another one will come—because everybody has his or her perception. So we see things differently,” she said.
She noted that having a clear understanding of one’s destination in life makes it easier to assess opinions and determine whether they contribute meaningfully to personal growth.
According to her, feedback from others should serve as an opportunity to improve existing decisions and plans rather than compel individuals to abandon their convictions or adopt lifestyles inconsistent with their aspirations.
Ms Sackey stressed that individuals must also exercise discernment when making choices about their appearance and clothing, explaining that such decisions should be guided by purpose, appropriateness and personal preference rather than the desire to impress others.
She said people should consider whether their clothing was suitable for the occasion, served the intended purpose and reflected how they wished to present themselves.
“Does it wear well where I’m wearing? Does it serve the purpose? Does it serve the occasion that I’m going or I’m using it for? You have to look at all these things,” she stated.
The relationship counsellor further cautioned against adopting lifestyles driven by competition, unnecessary spending or the pressure to constantly display wealth and material possessions.
She observed that individuals should be intentional about how they present themselves and avoid allowing societal expectations to dictate their choices.
Ms Sackey also pointed out that some wealthy individuals maintain modest appearances, stressing that personal worth and success should not necessarily be measured by extravagant dressing or constant displays of material possessions.
She encouraged individuals to remain confident in their identity, make decisions that align with their values and allow constructive feedback to enhance, rather than undermine, their personal choices.
