NPP First National Vice Chairman aspirant Mustapha Abdul Hamid has urged Ghanaians to judge former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia based on his competence and ability to serve the country rather than his religious background.
According to him, Dr Bawumia’s ambition to lead Ghana is driven by a desire to serve the nation and not to advance an Islamic agenda.
Mr Hamid made the remarks at the Danquah Institute’s 2026 Liberty Lecture held in Accra, where he spoke about leadership, democracy and the political future of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He said attempts to portray Dr Bawumia’s political ambitions through the lens of religion were misplaced and risked undermining the principles of merit and national service.
Mr Hamid maintained that Dr Bawumia should be assessed on his qualifications, experience, competence and vision for Ghana rather than his faith.
He argued that Ghana’s democratic system requires citizens to evaluate political leaders based on what they can contribute to the development of the country.
The NPP First National Vice Chairman aspirant said Dr Bawumia’s record in public service demonstrated his commitment to Ghana and should form the basis for assessing his suitability for national leadership.
He further called on Ghanaians to reject attempts to introduce religious considerations into political debates, stressing the importance of unity and equal opportunity for all citizens.
The comments come amid ongoing discussions within the NPP and the wider political space over the party’s future leadership and the qualities required to lead Ghana.
Mr Hamid’s position is that competence, integrity and commitment to national development should remain the key considerations in determining who is capable of leading the country, irrespective of religious affiliation.
