The Ministry of Health has ordered the immediate temporary closure of the Nursing Training College, Techiman Krobo, following what it described as persistent student unrest and the breakdown of rules and regulations at the institution.
The directive, which took effect on Wednesday, July 29, requires all students to vacate the campus by 5:00 p.m. and return to their respective homes until further notice. Parents and guardians have also been advised to make the necessary arrangements for their wards.
In a press release issued by the Head of Health Training Institutions, Tony Goodman, the Ministry said the decision was reached after several attempts to restore calm through dialogue and stakeholder engagement failed to resolve the situation.
According to the Ministry, repeated meetings, counselling sessions and appeals involving stakeholders, including the Regional Security Council, were held to encourage peaceful dialogue and restore order on campus.
However, it said some students continued to engage in acts that disrupted academic activities and threatened the peace, safety and orderly administration of the college.
“Despite several meetings, counselling, and appeals by stakeholders including the Regional Security Council, the Ministry to encourage dialogue and restore order, some students have continued to engage in conduct that disrupts academic activities and threatens the peace, safety, and orderly administration of the institution.”
The Ministry explained that the temporary closure is intended to restore calm on campus, safeguard lives and property, and provide the appropriate authorities with the opportunity to assess the situation before deciding on the reopening of the institution.
“The temporary closure is intended to restore calm, protect lives and property, and allow appropriate authorities to assess the situation and determine the necessary steps toward reopening the College under conducive conditions.”
The Ministry assured students, parents and the general public that efforts are underway to resolve the situation as quickly as possible and indicated that information regarding the reopening of the college would be communicated through the appropriate official channels.
“We wish to assure all stakeholders that every effort will be made to resolve the situation promptly. Information regarding the reopening of the College will be communicated through official channels in due course.”
The Ministry further appealed for the understanding, cooperation and support of all stakeholders as it works to restore a safe, peaceful and disciplined learning environment at the institution.
