Lawyer for the Kristo Asafo Mission, Nana Kofi Kantanka, has provided the church’s account of the shooting incident involving former Dome Kwabenya Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, alleging that she fired the first shot and repeatedly rammed the church’s gates with her vehicle.
Addressing the media, Nana Kofi Kantanka clarified that he was not physically present when the incident occurred but had been briefed in his capacity as a church member and legal representative.
According to him, the incident occurred during the introduction of the newly appointed leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission, a process initiated following the death of the church’s founder.
He explained that the church’s constitution mandates the Council of Elders to select a successor from among the founder’s sons, adding that the process had begun about a month earlier before a candidate was finally presented to the General Council.
“It’s all about the installation or introduction of the newly appointed leader. Our founder has passed on and there needs to be a replacement in terms of the leadership, so the constitution gave some powers to the Council of Elders to go through a process and appoint a new leader from among the sons of the founder.”
Nana Kofi Kantanka said the incident occurred shortly after the ceremony had ended when attendees heard loud noises coming from one of the church’s entrances.
According to the lawyer, when the vehicle failed to gain access through the southern gate, it moved to the northern gate where the same action was allegedly repeated.
“What I know is that after the ceremony, they had a very loud bang. There are two gates, the northern gate and the southern gate. The bang came again and then we realized that it was a car which was banging at the gate and wanted to enter.
“She couldn’t penetrate the gate through with her car, so she went to the northern gate and repeated the same thing. She banged the second gate and then the security apparatus indicated to her that what she was doing was dangerous because there were people within the premises.
He said church security personnel responded by firing warning shots to prevent the vehicle from entering and endangering those gathered at the venue.
“They started firing warning shots to prevent them from coming in because when you enter through the gates with your car, you don’t know who you can walk over or drive over.”
Nana Kofi Kantanka also disputed reports suggesting that Adwoa Safo was shot by church security, insisting that the information available to him presented a different sequence of events.
“As to whether they shot her or whether she was wounded after seeing pictures around, that’s not what actually happened on the ground. The briefing I got was that she fired the first shot and then banged the gate with her car.
The lawyer maintained that his account was based on information provided to him by persons at the scene and called for a thorough investigation to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
As of the time of filing this report, Sarah Adwoa Safo or her representatives had not publicly responded to the allegations made by the Kristo Asafo Mission’s lawyer.
