The Gallant Cadres of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have called for the immediate operationalisation of the Komenda Sugar Factory, insisting that the long-abandoned facility must be put to use to restore jobs and revive the local economy in Komenda and surrounding communities.
In a statement issued to the media, the group traced the historical significance of Komenda, noting its rich heritage as a major trading settlement during the colonial era and highlighting its transformation into an industrial hub following the establishment of the Komenda Sugar Factory in 1964.
They described the factory, formerly known as GHASEL, as a key driver of employment and economic activity in its operational years, supporting farmers, transport operators, traders and other small businesses along the sugar value chain.
The group noted that the factory collapsed in the late 1990s due to a combination of raw material shortages, technical challenges and poor maintenance, leading to widespread job losses and economic decline in the area.
They further stated that efforts to revive the factory under the previous National Democratic Congress administration led to its rehabilitation and inauguration in 2016, but alleged that it ceased operations after the change of government in 2017 and has remained inactive since.
According to the Gallant Cadres, a recent visit to the facility showed no signs of activity, with the factory gates locked, buildings deteriorating and parts of the premises overgrown with weeds, describing the situation as disappointing and unacceptable.
The group questioned whether relevant state institutions, including the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the presidency, the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem Municipal Assembly and other stakeholders, are aware of the current state of the factory and whether personnel are still being paid to oversee its operations.
They called for urgent answers and accountability, stressing that continued inactivity at the factory undermines public confidence and deepens economic hardship in Komenda and its environs.
The Gallant Cadres urged government authorities to provide clear timelines and concrete steps toward restoring the factory, warning that the situation risks being seen as another unfulfilled promise to the people of Komenda and Ghana at large.
