The Western North Regional Minister, Honourable Wilbert Petty Brentum, has questioned the methodology used by Global InfoAnalytics in assessing the performance of regional ministers.
Honourable Brentum was responding to an assessment by the research organisation which ranked him among the lowest-performing regional ministers.
Speaking to the media, the Minister said assessments of public officials were important because they could help identify areas requiring improvement, but stressed the need for such assessments to be based on a clear understanding of the responsibilities of the officials involved.
He explained that regional ministers primarily perform coordinating and supervisory functions, working with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to facilitate the implementation of government programmes and projects.
According to him, the Regional Coordinating Council also monitors projects being undertaken by the Assemblies and collaborates with decentralized departments, including the Regional Directorates of Education and Health, to support development across the region.
Honourable Brentum further identified the maintenance of peace and stability as a key responsibility of the Regional Coordinating Council, noting that the council works with the various security agencies to ensure that the region remains peaceful.
He argued that Global Info Analytics should have engaged him before conducting the assessment to gain a better understanding of the responsibilities of regional ministers and the projects being implemented in the Western North Region.
The Minister said several GETFund projects had been undertaken in the region during his tenure, stressing that persons entrusted with public responsibilities must be accountable for their performance and ensure that their duties are carried out to the satisfaction of the people.
He, however, questioned the accuracy of an assessment which, in his view, acknowledged some aspects of his work while also attributing projects to him that he said he had not undertaken.
Honourable Brentum therefore called for a more thorough assessment process that takes into consideration the actual responsibilities of regional ministers, their measurable activities and the projects implemented within their respective regions.
