Real Madrid forward Rodrygo Silva de Goes, is expected to return to competitive action in early 2027 as he continues his recovery from a serious knee injury that has kept him out for several months.
The 25-year-old Brazilian suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and a tear to the external meniscus in his right leg during Real Madrid’s 1-0 defeat to Getafe on March 2, 2026. The extent of the injury was confirmed by the club the following day.
Rodrygo subsequently underwent successful surgery on March 10, with Real Madrid confirming that the procedure was carried out by specialist Dr Manuel Leyes under the supervision of the club’s medical services. He began his rehabilitation shortly afterwards.
The recovery timeline for an injury of this nature has ruled Rodrygo out for the majority of the 2026-27 campaign, with reports indicating that his earliest realistic return is now around January 2027.
Spanish outlet AS reported that the most optimistic projection is for Rodrygo to return to playing minutes in early 2027, following a rehabilitation process estimated at between 10 and 12 months.
The latest reports indicate that Real Madrid remain cautious with the winger and are not rushing his recovery. A report published this week also puts his return at the beginning of 2027, while noting that he continues his rehabilitation work at the club’s facilities.
Rodrygo’s injury has been a major setback for both the player and Real Madrid. He was forced to miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup with Brazil after initially establishing himself as an important member of the national team.
FIFA reported after the injury that the ACL rupture appeared likely to rule the Brazilian out of the tournament.
Despite the long rehabilitation period, Rodrygo has reportedly continued to make progress in his recovery. AS reported in July that he had been undergoing daily physiotherapy and gym work at Valdebebas, with signs of improvement in his mobility and overall condition.
His rehabilitation is being carefully managed because of the severity of the injury. An ACL reconstruction combined with a meniscus injury requires a gradual progression through different stages of recovery before a player can safely return to competitive football.
For Real Madrid, Rodrygo’s eventual return will provide a significant boost to the squad. The Brazilian has been an important attacking option since joining the club from Santos in 2019 and has played a key role in several of the team’s biggest matches.
However, the club is expected to remain patient rather than risk an early comeback that could jeopardise his long-term fitness.
Rodrygo’s immediate target is therefore not simply a return to training but completing the rehabilitation process successfully and regaining the strength, mobility and match fitness required to compete at the highest level.
If his recovery continues according to the current projections, the Brazilian could begin the next phase of his return around January 2027, with a gradual reintegration into team training before he is cleared for competitive action.
For now, Real Madrid supporters will have to wait as one of the club’s key attacking players continues his long road back from a serious ACL and meniscus injury.
