Chelsea’s ownership structure is facing fresh uncertainty after chairman Todd Boehly and fellow shareholder Mark Walter reportedly opened discussions to sell their stakes in the club to majority owner Clearlake Capital.
According to reports by the Financial Times and ESPN, the talks could see Clearlake increase its control of the Premier League club and potentially take full control of Chelsea’s ownership structure. No formal agreement has been reached, and the discussions remain ongoing.
Clearlake currently holds about 61.5% of Chelsea, while Boehly and Walter each hold approximately 12.8%. Their combined stake would therefore represent about 25.6% of the club if both sales are completed.
The potential change comes amid longstanding tensions within Chelsea’s ownership group over the direction and management of the club. Boehly and Clearlake co-founder Behdad Eghbali have previously been reported to have differed over key strategic issues, including recruitment, football operations and the club’s long-term infrastructure plans.
Chelsea was acquired in 2022 by a consortium led by Clearlake Capital and Boehly’s group for about £2.5 billion following Roman Abramovich’s forced sale of the club. A potential transaction involving the two minority shareholders could now significantly reshape the ownership arrangement established four years ago.
Reports also indicate that the discussions come as Mark Walter faces increased scrutiny over his wider business interests and has recently agreed to sell his majority stake in the Los Angeles Lakers for a reported record $12.5 billion. The development has added further attention to the future of his investments, including his Chelsea holding.
A deal for the Chelsea stakes could value the club at more than £5 billion, although the final valuation and terms remain subject to negotiations.
Boehly is expected to remain Chelsea chairman until the end of the current season under the ownership arrangement agreed in 2022. If the proposed sale goes ahead, Clearlake would emerge with substantially greater control and could usher in a new phase in the club’s leadership and decision-making structure.
