President John Dramani Mahama has paid tribute to the late former Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, describing his contribution to Ghana’s security, democratic governance and national development as a lasting part of the country’s history.
President Mahama made the remarks during the unveiling of a cenotaph in honour of the late former Defence Minister, where he praised Dr. Omane Boamah for his dedication and commitment to the Republic.
He said the ceremony was not only to unveil a monument but also to recognize the service of a patriot who devoted his life to Ghana.
“Today we gather not only to unveil a cenotaph, but to reaffirm our nation’s gratitude to a devoted patriot whose life was dedicated to the service of Ghana. This ceremony honors the memory of the late Honorable Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, who served our country with distinction as Minister of Defense.”.
The President said the late Dr. Omane Boamah distinguished himself in public service, particularly during his tenure as Minister of Defence, where he contributed to efforts aimed at safeguarding the country’s security and stability.
President Mahama said the cenotaph should serve as more than a physical monument, stressing that it represents the values and principles that defined Dr. Omane Boamah’s life and public service. He noted that Dr. Omane Boamah’s approach to public service was characterised by diligence, humility and a strong commitment to Ghana’s national interest.
“A cenotaph is more than stone and inscriptions. It is a lasting reminder that while life may end, the values it embodied—service, integrity, patriotism, and sacrifice—must continue to inspire future generations. Dr. Omane Boamah served with diligence, humility, and unwavering commitment to the security and stability of our republic.”
According to the President, the late Defence Minister’s contribution extended beyond his role in government, particularly in strengthening Ghana’s armed forces and supporting the country’s democratic governance.
“His contribution to strengthening our armed forces and advancing Ghana’s democratic governance will remain part of our national story.”
President Mahama said the cenotaph would therefore serve as a permanent reminder of Dr. Omane Boamah’s contribution to Ghana and the responsibility of future generations to uphold the values of patriotism, integrity and selfless service.
The unveiling forms part of efforts to preserve the memory and legacy of the late former Defence Minister, whose public service was closely associated with Ghana’s defence and democratic institutions.
