Farmers, civil society organisations and gender advocates have called on the government, traditional authorities and other stakeholders to provide greater support for rural women farmers to boost agricultural production and strengthen food security.
The call was made on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at Fiaso, near Forikrom in the Techiman Municipality of the Bono East Region, during a commemoration of International Rural Women’s Day.
The programme was jointly organised by the Abrono Organic Farming Project (ABOFAP) and the Rural Women Farmers Association of Ghana (RUWFAG) under the theme, “Empowering Rural Women: Building a Resilient Future.”
Addressing participants, the Twafohene of Forikrom and Chief Executive Officer of ABOFAP, Nana Kwaw Adam, highlighted the significant contribution of women to agriculture, local economic development and household food security.
He also underscored the role of female farmers in promoting organic agriculture and climate-resilient farming practices, which are essential for sustainable food production.

A member of RUWFAG from Lawra in the Upper West Region, Madam Ziem Evelyn, encouraged rural women farmers to remain committed to their aspirations and take advantage of the economic opportunities in agriculture.
She described farming as a promising sector for investment and urged women to recognise its potential to improve their livelihoods and achieve financial independence.
The Head of the Department of Gender at the Bono East Regional Coordinating Council, Madam Monica Onyen, called on traditional leaders to allocate land to rural women to enable them to expand their farming activities.
She also appealed to men, particularly husbands, to support their wives engaged in agriculture, stressing the importance of family support in helping women succeed in their farming businesses.
Meanwhile, the Women’s Leader of ABOFAP, Madam Esther Boakye Yiadom, described women as instrumental in addressing several challenges confronting society.

She encouraged women to embrace organic farming and backyard gardening to produce healthy, quality food for their households.
The commemoration concluded with a float through the streets of Fiaso to raise awareness of International Rural Women’s Day and recognise the contributions of women to agriculture and community development.
The event highlighted the need for stronger collaboration among government institutions, traditional authorities, civil society organisations and farming communities to address the challenges facing rural women and create an enabling environment for them to contribute more effectively to agricultural development.
